If not, to what extent can deepening be effected, and for vessels of what dimensions (length.

draught, and beam at that

draught) can accommoda-

be berthed at the wharves. The harbour has a depth of 40 ft. and over| (L.W.O.S.T.) except in Rangitoto Channel, which can be deepened to 40 ft. (L.W.0.8.T.).

of the cost of special plant).

12. What extra charges for

the maintenance

(a) of the entrance and

approach channel,

(b) in the case of on- closed docks, of the entrance lock, if any,

to such important! dock or docks, (c) of

the principal berths-

would be involved as a

result of these improve ments?

(Now- Where detailed es- timates have not

already been prepared only approximate ag ures are desired.)

The permanent works now under con- struction will reduce cost of main- tenance.

As regards any work at present in progress or in con- tamplation, these costs will only be increased slightly by additional maintenance dredging as the depth and length of the entrance channel, is increased year by year. In five years from now it is expected that the maintenance dredging will cost 12,000 per

annum.

Maintenance of wharves and structures will increase proportionately with increase of expital expenditure. Cost of maintenance of increased depths of harbour, channel, and approaches will not increase.
